Osiris (Original Draft) Chapter 5

Chapter 5
The Inscription

The animals came in to see Isis looking down the hall. [Note--I believe that by "the animals," I meant the gods in their animal form. Cripes! No respect!] She had a worried look on her face. When she saw them, she ran to them and said, "Osiris is gone!"

"The worst has come to be!" said Khnum dramatically. But his audience gathered around Isis.

"Where'd he go?" "When did you notice?" "Did you see Set?" they all asked.

"I don't know! I don't know!" Isis said. "All I know is that I went everywhere and he is'nt [sic] anywhere!"

"Look! Osiris!" Bast said.

"And Set!" Thoth said.

The two were coming their way, carrying a large silver box. The crocodile-headed Sobek was in back, holding it up. They sat [sic] it down on the ground.

"Look what Set made!" Osiris said. "Isn't it beautiful?"

"Set made that?"

Set smiled.

"Real silver," Osiris continued, "with inlaid rubies, gold, and emeralds. He made it, alright [sic]!"

Thoth noticed a small carving on the underside of the lid. When Set's back was to him, he read it:

To rulers of the Underworld:
Kingdom of the Dead. May Set
rule the world forevermore.
[Note--this text was not in italics, but in cursive, in the original.]

Thoth read it again to remember it, then went and told it to the others, who whispered it amongst themselves. The handful of them went inside: Thoth, Bast, Sobek, Isis, Khnum, Anubis, Hathor, and Horus.

They all sat down in Bast's chambers. She had rock and roll posters all over her walls--the Bangles, Bon Jovi, Guns n' Roses, etc., and a large collection of tapes, as well as a radio. [Note--*wearily* Yes...]

"Now what?" Bast said.

Isis looked around. "Where's Osiris?"

Khnum gasped. "He's outside with Set!" [Note--no, the Egyptian gods would not make good babysitters. "Hey Upuat, where'd you leave Baby Ihi?" "ZOMG! He was playing with Apophis!"]
