Bumps in the night
John and Mike thought they were hearing things. Moans, shrieks, and other strange, eerie noises. They looked around them. A pale, white, eerie ghost was coming towards them! They stood there, their mouths wide open. They couldn't move. They were so frightened. The ghost came closer and closer. Finally both boys ran off, yelling and shouting. Then they stopped. They looked behind them. Nothing was coming. "Whew!" said John. He leaned against the wall. The wall spun around. "Help!" shouted John. "John?" a faint voice said. It was Mike's. "I'm behind the wall, Mike! Help me out!" John heard Mike shout "Ghost! Help, ghost!" [Note--a comma is missing after "shout." I don't have the original story on hand to check if this was a mistake in the original or a typo, but seeing as I didn't take note of it, and as I later on properly use such a comma, it's probably a typo.] Both boys ducked. A few minutes later, John lifted his head. No ghost in sight. He stood up and brushed himself off. "Mike, help me out!" he yelled. Mike pushed the wall and was careful not to get trapped inside himself. "Did you see the ghost?" he asked John. "No, it went by your way." "I didn't see it!" said Mike. "Well, I saw it, but it didn't come my way." John perked up. "If it didn't go your way and it didn't go my way, it must've went [sic] through the wall!" The boys checked the wall. It was very thick. "How strange!" said Mike. Then, all of a sudden, they both heard a shrill scream. "D-did you hear that?" asked John. "Yeah!" said Mike. "It sounded like Linda! Come on, we've got to help her!"
