INTRODUCTION: What little text there is of the Trench Rats sequel, Inspector Dobermann To The Core. While Dobermann On Wheels (of which no text seems to be in existence) was, I believe, meant to be comedic, Core was meant to be almost a thriller-type story, a departure from the goofier early attempts; at least, I didn't give it the same dippy summaries as the other TR stories. From the looks of it, Wheels, which I touted on the cover of the first TR novel, either was not meant to be part of the trilogy, or else was dropped, as the cover of Core proclaims this story to be THIRD in the "trilogy." (There were more than three TR books planned, BTW, but this almost always happens with me.) The story was partly inspired by my habit of going out and walking on the ice caking the pavement, and cracking it with my feet. Plot? Whoever said there would be plot? Well, I think the BASIC plot was that Dobey was going to seem to be a terrible guy in this story, when it would turn out that he wasn't behind whatever...terribleness...ended up happening. It's already clear I'm vague with plot, isn't it?
This story (or rather attempt at one) was written in the same five-subject notebook as The Trench Rats--On Leave, "An Interview At LRU," D Is For Damien 2: The Night Of The Goat, "The Night Of The Goat Excerpts" 1-4, Sidekicks (original draft), "D Is For Damien Excerpt," Sidekicks 2: The Return Of Luther, Lucifer (original draft), "The Return Of Luther Excerpt," and "The Return Of Luther Blurb." An interesting aside, the word "Core" on the all-caps title page has little icicles dangling from it--my feeble attempt at dramatic illustration. Another interesting aside, this story looks to have been written over top an erased copy of Akhenaton & Nefertiti--of which I had copied only one page before doing away with it. 1991.
