A Nightmare On Manitou Island Chapter 2

Chapter 2
Manitou & GeeBees

Inside were scary wax sculptures of monsters and demons. But there was one sculpture which caught their eye the most.

[Illustration: Mitchi Manitou--an upright beast with a bearlike body, a deerlike face, evil eyes, horns, and moose antlers; he's holding a broken branch in one hand. A sign beside him reads, "MANITOU."]

"Wow," Lucifer said, "do you suppose we'd be able to find one on this island?"

"Nah," Sandy said, "they're too big."

They left the theatre, going back into the woods to a sandpit they had seen earlier.

"Look, tracks!" Lucifer said, pointing. In the sand were human-like footprints, only they had pointed toes.

"Weird person," Lucifer mumbled. [Note--it looks as if the original spelling was "wierd."] He walked on a bit and tripped in a pit.

"Look what I found!" Sandy said, running to him. "It's a container--full of blood!"

"I wonder who dug this pit?" Lucifer asked. He dug on a bit. The ground was hard, so he got a shovel from an abandoned shed and started digging.

"Hey, I hit something!" Lucifer exclaimed. He brushed away the dirt. It was a skull.

Sandy dropped the container. The ground was stained red. "I'm leaving."

The [sic] walked to a mudpuddle [sic] to wash up. To their surprise, they found more tracks--these were bigger and looked like rat tracks.

"Oh, boy!" Sandy sighed. "Signs of a struggle--and an O, written in the sand."

Lucifer looked. The O had devil horns--O. [Note--here is an O with two little devil horns.]

"What's O stand for?" Lucifer asked.

Sandy shrugged. "But there's a trail."

A wooden sign near the trail said 'Ocryx Trail'. [Note--there are erasure marks, and I recall that I misspelled the name as "Orcyx" or something similar.]

Lucifer and Sandy looked at each other and shrugged. They started up the trail. Sandy fell down but Lucifer was talking and did'nt [sic] notice.

"How old's your grandma?" Lucifer asked. "Sandy? Sandy?" He turned around. "She must've ran [sic] ahead." He dropped the shovel and continued on.

Sandy, meanwhile, was walking around, trying to find Lucifer. She heard a scream behind her suddenly and dropped her toy ice cream cone. She walked away fast but slowed down and tried to get calm. She was walking past a bush when she first heard the sound of a shovel being dragged and a snicker once in a while. She turned around. Nothing. She continued walking, then turned around again. Still nothing. This kept up for a few minutes until, "Aieehahahahaaa!" Clunk! [Note--Mya and I later made many jokes out of this. "What goes 'Aieehahahahaaa!' Clunk!--?" Keep reading for the punchline...]

Sandy screeched and ran smack! into Lucifer.

"Sandy!" Lucifer said. "I heard a wierd [sic] laugh!"

"Me, too," Sandy said. "It was right behind me!" Then, "Why were you running towards it?"

"I thought it was you."

They started walking and found Lucifer's shovel lying near where Sandy heard the laugh.

"Is this the sound you heard?" Lucifer rubbed the shovel against the ground.

"Yeah, that's it," Sandy said.

Something in between them laughed.

"Ahh!" They both ran in different directions.

Lucifer seemed to be the one being followed now. He saw Sandy's cone and picked it up. There was a snicker behind him. He turned around and shot the cone.

"Grrrrrrrr," something said.

Lucifer yelped and started running. Whatever was chasing him followed. Lucifer tripped and fell. He lay still for a bit. Nothing happened. He looked up.

In front of him was a footprint. Sandy's footprint! Lucifer followed the tracks and soon tripped over something. The something moved and got up.

"Sandy!" Lucifer said again. He shot her with the cone.

"Ouch! Why'd you do that?" Sandy asked.

"To see if it really was you."

"Where'd you get my cone?"

"I found it up on the path."

"I think something was chasing me!" Sandy said.

"Something was chasing me, too!" Lucifer said. "It was going 'grawawa' and it was right behind me."

"Well, in case we get separated again," Sandy said, "take my bracelet and break the beads off, and throw them on the ground to show where you've been." She handed him her beaded bracelet.

"Sure thing," Lucifer said.

"Ahhhh!" A tiny dog flew over Lucifer's head.

"What the heck was that?" Lucifer asked.

"Yiiiipe!" Another dog flew over.

Lucifer shrugged. They sat down to rest near a tree.

"Boy," Lucifer said, pointing to another tree, "that's the ugliest tree I've ever seen."

A huge white creature stepped out from behind the tree.

"Roaaaaaurrrr!!" it roared.

"It's the Manitou!" Lucifer and Sandy screeched, running off.
