Why The Moon Speaks Your Name

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Short essay item prompted by, "Why does the moon speak your name?" Dated 7/14/01.

WHY THE MOON SPEAKS YOUR NAME

The moon speaks one's name in those quiet moments when you feel like you are the only one on Earth, yet you are not "lonely." The world is dark and blue; if it's summer, you hear crickets and peepers; if it's winter, you hear only the wind. In the winter the moon brings a loneliness with it. In the summer under the moon you are never alone.

Times like this I look out the window and if there's a breeze, but just a small one, and if it's warm and balmy, I often wish I could just walk out the door and down the road and keep walking forever. The moon always makes things seem magical somehow. What would happen if I were to just walk away and never look back? Would the moon keep speaking my name so that I might walk into some fantasy world that only it will show? Or will it stop speaking and the dawn come, and the whole world return to normal?

Under the bright sun so many things seem to lose their magic...

Calm summer nights with a large moon I still always feel like walking off forever, but not knowing what lies ahead, or if the light should fade before I get there, I stay where I am and merely watch it follow its course instead.
