Sidekicks Excerpt

INTRODUCTION: An excerpt from Sidekicks. This is in the old battered five-subject notebook following the original text of D Is For Damien, so I suspect it's acting as a sort of teaser for the next book in the series. Unlike most of my excerpts, this one appears to be word-for-word (with one small exception) the same as an existing scene in the text of the original Sidekicks. So...if this looks familiar, then that's why! I'm not sure if this scene was written here first and then wedged into Sidekicks as it was written, or if the scene was written in the story first, then excerpted here; it could be either. Likely 1990, but possibly 1991.

"So it's them again!" Damien said furiously, pounding the table and walking crossly to the other side of the room. "They'll never give up! First animals. Then kids. Then us. Now, a woman's unborn baby?"

Father Damien stared at the table. "Not just any baby, Damien. This baby is supposed to be born on October 31. Halloween."

Damien stopped. "The most important day on the occult calendar," he whispered. He slapped his head. "Oh, man! why [sic] didn't I think of that!" [Note--incorrect capitalization of "Why." Oddly, in the type-up, I put only one space after the exclamation mark, as if it's meant to be a continuation of the previous sentence--I did the same thing in the type-up of Sidekicks, so I don't know if for some reason I did it on purpose (thinking there was only one "space" in the handwritten versions??), or if I copied-and-pasted one of these type-ups to the other. *is mystified*]

"Those guys can turn up anywhere," Officer Jones said. "How'll we ever find them in time? Halloween is the day after tomorrow!"

Shirana noticed Damien thinking. He suddenly said, "There's only one way," and left.

"Where's he going?" Boomer asked. Belinda nodded.

"That's simple," Madame Solatska replied. "My ball tells all."

"Well, have it tell us where he's going!" Officer Jones snapped.

"He's going back to the streets," the gypsy [sic] said, waving her hands. "To get his street friends."

The others gasped. The streets! There could be no worse place for Damien! And tomorrow was--was--

Devil's Night!
