Osiris (Original Draft) Chapter 10

Chapter 10
The Start of the Judgement Hall

Bast broke into her room to find only three of her friends left--Sakhmet, Anubis, and Sobek. They were eating candybars.

"What's wrong?" Sakhmet said.

"It's Osiris! Set got him!"

The trio rushed up. "What? How? What?" they were all saying.

"Set! He--he--" Bast started sobbing. Her friends, and Hathor, surrounded her.

"Where?" Hathor asked gently.

Bast choked down her last sob. "In the dining room."

They all rushed there for a big shock. Osiris was gone [--] but on the wall, in red letters, was:

[Illustration: The word "SET," written in dripping letters; a knife (the "dagger") is sticking out of the wall beside it. (Talk about subtle.)]

The dagger was stuck in the wall beside it.

"Blood!" Anubis gasped. "It's blood!"

They ran outside, afraid that Set would come back any minute.

They came to a tunnel in the ground. After Bast went in to look around, she came out, wide-eyed [sic].

"It's a hallway!"

They all went down to look. Sure enough. An underground hall!

"Ra had an idea about it," said a voice. All heads turned to see Osiris.

"You--you can't be alive!" Bast said.

"I'm not. But Ra allowed me to come to tell you his plans."

Everyone rushed over to Osiris, who told them about what should be called the Underworld--this would be the Underworld Judgement Hall. The dead people would come down to have their hearts weighed. Everyone had a part: Anubis would do the weighing, Thoth would write the verdict, Horus would lead the people there, Sobek would guard, Osiris would judge...and HAL would eat the guilty people!

[Illustration: An ostrich feather. Text reads: "Feather of Truth--this is about what it looks like, in the book. It was placed on the scale and weighed against the heart."]
