Two Spies
As soon as the dogs got back to headquarters, the cloaked one raised his hood and pointed at Watu-Haru's painting. [Note--I think I meant "lowered his hood."]
"That priest was one of my ancestors and I'm going to get--er, inherit--his treasure," he said, staring at it with dark, Arabic eyes. [Note--some real confusion here on my part. I don't think I intended any racism in my usage of "Arabic"--I think I just meant to describe the character as being Arabic. However, back then I wasn't as "enlightened" as I am now and I may really have had some stereotyped ideas of Arabs. Another thing to take into account is the fact that, seeing as this character at least claims descent from the ancient Egyptians, would he even be "Arabic"? Maybe, but I honestly don't know. I don't know enough about the Middle Eastern races to say for sure what the exact term would be. So...just thought I'd point that out.]
"Really?" another dog asked.
"He was equivalent to my grandfather, only older." He laughed and tapped the picture. "You're going to thank me for this one, Gramps." [Note--I doubt Watu-Haru would appreciate being called "Gramps."]
"Are you sure it's him?"
"Yes. That is his sign." The sign was a staff with a jackal's head, a falcon's talon, and a serpent wrapped around it.
"That's been in my family thousands of years. If I was an ancient Egyptian, I'd be the high priest of Anubis."
"How'd they know it was you?"
"Because of this." He exposed his left forearm.
The others gasped.
It was a tattoo of the sign.
[Illustration: The descendant of Watu-Haru. He's wearing a robe with the hood down, and holding out his left arm, upon which is the symbol in question. Before him is a folded paper with an illustration depicting Watu-Haru--in an Anubis headdress--bowing before a bier on which sits a sarcophagus. A hawk or ba is hovering above it and a jackal appears to be standing in front of Watu-Haru, who's kneeling; the symbol is behind him and there's a cartouche and various scribbles above the whole. Hold on!! I just noticed that the scribbles are in the old "hieroglyphic code" I made up long ago! It looks like it reads..."The deceased," "Cheops" (in cartouche), "Watu-Haru." Huh! The caption reads: "A direct decendant [sic]!"]
"Everyone decended [sic] from Watu-Haru has it."
"That's nice."
"I'm going to Stonehenge again to see if I can find any of those tablets."
Coventry and Dufferin had gone to Stonehenge too, also looking for tablets. When the dog got there, he stopped suddenly and shouted, "What are you doing here?"
Lady Coventry and Lord Dufferin stopped, too.
"What are you doing here?" the dog demanded again.
"Us?" Lady Coventry stuttered. "We--uh, we--we're married! We're on our honeymoon, and we're married! See?" With this she grabbed Dufferin and kissed him.
[Illustration: Lord Dufferin and Lady Coventry seated upon a fallen stone (standing stones are visible behind them). Coventry has grabbed Dufferin's head and is kissing him, her eyes closed. Dufferin's eyes are wide open and it's obvious he's quite startled. The caption reads: "Love is a many splendored thing!"]
"I see," the dog said. "I'll leave you two lovebirds alone."
Dufferin spat and wiped his mouth. "What'd you do that for?"
"Well, it was spur of the moment!" Coventry replied hastily.
"I'll say it was!" Dufferin stood up. "We should get going."
"We did'nt [sic] get any tablets."
Dufferin picked up one. "That guy left one behind."
"Should'nt [sic] we check him out?"
"We already know who he is! Come on!"
