The Best Telephoner
Petrie rubbed his sore head, while Fredestaire lay down flat and patted his back.
"You idiot, why did you do that?" Petrie snapped at Dufferin.
"You surprised me!" Dufferin snapped back.
"Will you two shut up?" Coventry said. "They just knocked out Lord Carnarvon. Hard."
"Let's see if he's alright [sic]," Petrie said. They went inside.
It was hours later when Lord Carnarvon came to. He was in Petrie's parlor, sitting in a chair near the fire.
"They do'nt [sic] make pith helmets like they used to," Petrie's voice drifted over to him.
"Is that so?" Lady Carnarvon replied absently.
"I saw 'em in the shop yesterday and the price was three times as much as it used to be," Coventry said.
"Three times!" everyone said.
Lord Carnarvon sat up higher and rubbed his head. His pith helmet seemed alright [sic], though it's [sic] strap had come off at one side and it swayed drunkenly over his shoulder.
"Hey, he's up," Dufferin said.
"Are you alright [sic]?" Coventry said. They all came over to him.
"Yes, yes, I guess I am," Lord Carnarvon said, looking around. " How did I get here?"
"We hired a coach," Petrie said. [Note--guess I didn't think they had cars in the Twenties! Even though those humans just had a truck...hm.]
"Oh no--they're going to Stonehenge!" Lord Carnarvon exclaimed, remembering.
"Who?" someone asked.
"The dogs that knocked me out."
There was a 'clop, clop' in the street below. Petrie leaned out a window and shouted, "Halt!" [Note--"TAXI!"] He held up a paw, then turned to the others.
"Come on, let's go. All except you two." Petrie pointed at Lord and Lady Carnarvon.
"Why us?" Lord Carnarvon asked.
"Because we ca'nt [sic] take the chance of you getting knocked out again. Want me to call anyone?"
"Our daughter?" Lady Carnarvon asked. [Note--at the time I wrote this part, I don't believe I was aware that they had a son as well.]
"Okay." Petrie picked up the phone and called Lady Evelyn Carnarvon, told her to come over, and hung up. [Note--and HOW would Petrie know who their daughter is, much less where to call...?] He turned to see Coventry and the Lady trying not to smile, Dufferin holding his head, Fredestaire smiling already, and Lord Carnarvon looking surprised.
"What is it?" he said.
"You forgot to tell her where to come," Lady Carnarvon stated.
