Near Miss!
"Get outta here NOW!" Harvey screeched.
"No!" Esmeralda exclaimed. "This treehouse is just as much mine as it is yours."
"Can't you read?" Harvey's friend, Lawrence, added. "The sign says 'Boys ONLY'!"
"We can too read," Sadie, Ez's friend, piped in. "Prob'ly better than you. We can come here if we want."
"Yeah!" Susie, Cadillac, and Ann all shouted at the same time.
"Git!" Harvey and Lawrence shouted.
"Fine, but Wolfgang is coming with us," Ez replied. "C'mon, Wolfgang."
Wolfgang got up to follow.
"No way!" Harvey growled, racing over and grabbing Wolfgang's left arm. Wolfgang gazed at him, puzzled.
"He stays," Harvey said. "Wolfgang, you don't wanna go off with some stupid girls, do ya?"
"He does too!" Sadie snapped.
"Let's go!" Susie barked.
"He's staying here!"
"No, he isn't!"
"Uh-huh!"
"No!"
Wolfgang pulled out his whistle and blew, shattering the quarrel. He wrote on his slate, "Sorry, Harvey, but I do want to go."
Harvey looked disappointed, but then said, "Fine! All you girls get outta here. That includes you, Wolfgang!"
The two laughed, but Wolfgang ignored them as usual and climbed out, jumping to the ground. Now they were in the middle of an old gravel road leading down to a swampy, shrub-forested area littered with few abandoned shacks. Getting on their bikes, they milled about in the middle of the trail. All except Ez, who was listening to music on a set of headphones.
"C'mon, Ez," Sadie pleaded.
"Can't hear ya. I'm jammin.'"
Wolfgang suddenly noticed something at the far end of the road. He looked alarmed and grabbed Ez's arm, shaking it roughly.
"Cut it out, Wolfgang!"
Wolfgang shook his head and pointed, but Ez didn't look.
Suddenly, also, Sadie noticed it. "A car! Ez, move!"
Ez ignored her.
The car was speeding towards them. Just as it was about to run Ez over, Wolfgang grabbed her arm again and pulled her out of the way. The car went past as if the driver hadn't even noticed them, and bumped on down the road.
"Hit and runner!" Ez shrieked, shaking her fist. "Idiot!"
"C'mon, let's get outta here," Sadie quavered, and they got on their bikes and left.
