Major corrections to the information presented here:
* Many of the "alignments" and "frequencies" are incorrect, so should be mainly disregarded.
* "Bagucks" might in fact be a variant of "Pauguk," so has not properly entered the storyline just yet.
* Actually the Wendigo is the prototype of the GeeBee and not the other way around.
* Geezhigo-Quae does not rule over all wind elementals, nor does she live in the "windling realm," whatever that is; so far she hasn't been shown carrying a stick. She doesn't "dislike" outsiders, but is reserved toward them.
* "The strength of the medicine inherited seems to wane as the amount of a certain race within a halfling's blood also dwindles. (Meaning, for example, a half Ocryx will possess more Ocryx powers than one who is only one-quarter Ocryx)"--in Escape From Manitou Island, one-quarter-Ocryx children (Winter Born and Page Dupries) seem to buck this trend.
* Almost all the information pertaining to Kenu is now inaccurate, as is the description of Thunderbirds as not being kindly disposed toward humankind.
* The information regarding Maemaegawaese is uncertain seeing as these beings have not yet entered the story.
* "Magwamosa" is now spelled "Makwamosa." There isn't really such a thing as "black medicine."
* The description of manitous is somewhat off; the upright, clawed type is the typical Devil's Lake manitou while most other tribal manitous take deerlike form.
* Mashenomak has been dropped entirely seeing as the name looks to be a corruption of Michinimakinak, the Great Turtle. The appropriate name for a "Great Serpent" would be Mishiginebik, which has not yet entered the storyline.
* The original Mackinac Island was likely named for Michinimakinak, not for the Michinimakinong, seeing as THEY were named after HIM. The Michinimakinong are not referred to as Makinong. Gender roles are not much looser among them than among humans so female warriors are NOT too common. Removal of wings after being cast out of Michinimakinong society isn't really a known issue. They aren't frequently found on the Island seeing as they long ago moved to the Fairy Realm.
* "Mishupishu" is now the name for both an individual in the story and for his entire race. They do not dwell upon or around the Island.
* The personality and physical descriptions of the Mizauwabeekum are incorrect; they appear as small Pukwudjininee-like people roughly carved of stone, and are reclusive but kindly disposed toward others.
* Muzzu-Kummik-Quae is not in the story.
* The information about there being only three pureblooded Ocryxes, in light of the forthcoming Beneath Manitou Island, should be amended to three known fullblooded Ocryxes, or three fullblooded demonic Ocryxes. "The survival of all three pureblooded Ocryxes is necessary for the Island to survive, as it depends upon them all"--I'm uncertain if this applies to Tal Natha as well, though I do know it applies to Ocryx and Ocryana, and that all three of them would die if the Island were destroyed. Ocryana does not live near Skull Cave, at least, not after the ending of Manitou Island.
* The Pukwudjinees are now called Pukwudjininees. They do not appear as little children, but as small hairy people with large dark eyes.
* The GeeBees are not to blame for Wendigoes receiving a nasty reputation.
* Some of the elemental alignments might be inaccurate.
The original author's note precedes the article.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Just a listing of the different creatures, and (hopefully) basic descriptions of each. Some of these are taken from Ojibwa mythology.
A note, as some words (e. g., Maemaegawaese, Nebanaubae) are long and difficult to pronounce, I have decided to use the word as both the singular and the plural, without adding the proper Ojibwa plural ending (e. g., Maemaegawaesuk, Nebanaubaewuk).
More may be added later on. This has not been checked for typos.
BAGUCKS
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirit. ELEMENT: None. ALIGNMENT: Neutral evil. FREQUENCY: Unique. A minor spirit of ill repute, Bagucks appears as a small skeletal bird who, despite his moans of hunger, refuses all offerings of food. He is known to cause discord, accidents, and disharmony, but is not a significant threat to the Islanders.
FIRELINGS
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirits. ELEMENT: Fire. ALIGNMENT: Varied. FREQUENCY: Common. "Fireling" is a general term used to refer to any creature with a fire alignment; however, it is also applied to a particular race of beings which are fire elementals. They are small in size, looking much like tiny demons or gargoyles with leathery wings and reddish-colored skin; they squeak and hiss and spit like flames, and appear to be of low intelligence. They are most often to be found in areas where enchanted fires burn, and though seemingly not evil, may be dangerous due to their combustive quality.
GEEBEES (Jeebis, cannibal giants)
CLASS: Wendigoes. ELEMENT: Windlings. ALIGNMENT: Mainly chaotic evil. FREQUENCY: Common. The GeeBees (Jeebis = "ghosts") are a subtype of Wendigo, but the prototype from which the Wendigo gets its nasty reputation. They were originally much larger in stature than they are now, but still measure at about seven to eight feet tall, completely hairless with large yellow eyes, variously colored skin, pointed ears, and short "barbels" protruding from their chins. They are very thin, gangly, and emaciated, as they are always hungry and always seeking food...which for the most part consists of humans and other sentient beings. If it were not for their self-proclaimed "leader," Augwak, they would be much more chaotic and disorganized than they already are; it is only by virtue of Augwak's greater intelligence that he manages to hold them together as a group. In temperament they are maniacal, often soaring about as wind and cackling insanely, but they are also quite cowardly when confronted by stronger elementals. They are prone to making deals which they just as quickly break, as it suits them. On the whole, GeeBees are highly selfish and untrustworthy, and act only in their best interests.
GEEZHIGO-QUAE (Sky Woman)
CLASS: Manitou. ELEMENT: Windling. ALIGNMENT: Neutral good. FREQUENCY: Unique. Geezhigo-Quae, Sky Woman, is the physical creator of Manitou Island and watches over it from the windling realm. She also rules over all wind elementals, and thus is a powerful manitou. She appears as an elder woman decorated with feathers and bearing a tall stick adorned with the same (feathers being representative of the windlings). An army of windling Michinimakinong is at her beck and call, and she has command over many other windling spirits should she be so inclined. She is one of the important mother figures among the natives, and so is held in great respect and awe. In terms of personality, she is wise and caring of her own kind, yet also stern, forbidding, and cold when angered. She harbors dislike for outsiders (mainlanders) and chaotic or evil beings (GeeBees, Ocryxes, etc.), but for the most part manages to hold her dislike in check.
GITCHI MANITOU (Great Spirit)
CLASS: Manitou. ELEMENT: None. ALIGNMENT: Neutral. FREQUENCY: Unique. Gitchi Manitou, as the creator of Geezhigo-Quae and the original Manitou Island (before the flood), is considered the Great Spirit of the natives of the Island, akin to the Christian God. Similar to the Christian God, he "misjudged" several of his own creations and later had to punish them for their transgressions, but it is unknown if this was done purposefully or on accident. He took an active role in the first stages of creation, but then retreated into the sky realms and has not been seen, physically, for many ages. For the most part, he has allowed his lesser creations the power to do as they will upon the Island, and keeps out of mortal affairs.
HALFLINGS (Hybrid beings)
CLASS: Varied. ELEMENT: Varied. ALIGNMENT: Varied. FREQUENCY: Common. "Halfling" is the term used to refer to any being upon the Island who has parents of differing races. A halfling may have an Ocryx parent and a human parent; an Ocryx parent and a manitou parent; a human parent and a manitou parent; etc. The name "halfling" can be misleading, however, as many halflings may have the blood of three-quarters of one race, or may have the blood of more than two races within them; for example, the being X'aaru, who is three-quarters Ocryx, one-quarter human (and appears in Ocryx form); and the daughter of Manabozho and a Michinimakinong, who is half Turtle Spirit, one quarter human, and one quarter manitou. Due to successive generations and breeding among the different races, there may be many different combinations of halflings upon the Island, and some may even be halflings without even knowing it. Halflings take on many different appearances according to how much of one race they have within them (half Ocryxes/half humans, for example, appear as human, while those who are more than half Ocryx appear as Ocryxes); also, their alignments and elemental natures vary widely. One trait which varies little is the medicine of halflings. Almost all inherit at least a small portion of their parents' abilities concerning their respective elements, though whether they also inherit their parents' alignments depends on the situation. The strength of the medicine inherited seems to wane as the amount of a certain race within a halfling's blood also dwindles. (Meaning, for example, a half Ocryx will possess more Ocryx powers than one who is only one-quarter Ocryx.)
HALFLING SPIRITS ("Lost Souls")
CLASS: Varied. ELEMENT: Varied. ALIGNMENT: Varied, but mainly neutral. FREQUENCY: Common. Both the terms "halfling spirits" and "lost souls" are only general terms used to refer to those spirits who have been unable to pass over to the Land of Spirits, and during their attempted crossing-over accidentally merged with other lost souls. As most of the mergings which take place are between two or more different races, the resulting "halfling spirits" possess the physical qualities of more than one being. For some reason many halfling spirits strongly resemble the GeeBees, with other attributes thrown in (fur from tribal manitous, wings from Island spirits, etc.); all appear as pale and translucent, and tend to congregate at areas where spirits may pass over to the other world. As expected, they are especially to be found near Arch Rock and Crack-in-the-Island. Though eerie in appearance, for the most part they are harmless and of no particular alignment or purpose; they simply drift about with little meaning, watching the activities of the living. They appear to have lost all interest in passing to the next world or of remaining in the current one, and so are not usually to be found mourning their failure to move on.
KENU (Thunderbird)
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirit. ELEMENT: Windling/waterling/fireling. ALIGNMENT: Chaotic good. FREQUENCY: Unique. Kenu is the great Thunderbird, who dwells within Skull Cave upon the Island. His primary form is that of a giant bird, similar to a cross between an eagle and a heron; although he may also take human form, as a man wearing a crest of feathers. He spends much of his time sleeping, and awakens mainly only to bring thunderstorms to the region. Though listed as "unique," he has claimed to have come originally from a clan of thunderbirds living in the sky realm, and so may not be the only one of his kind. Though threatening in appearance, Kenu is generally even tempered and well disposed toward mortals, reputedly unlike other thunderbirds. As a being of the sky and of storms, he shares a wind/water element, akin to the Ocryxes; he also has a slight fireling association, due to his ability to cast lightning bolts. He is not often active except in summer, and must often be summoned and awakened should one desire his attention.
MAEMAEGAWAESE (Butterfly Spirits)
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirits. ELEMENT: Windlings. ALIGNMENT: Lawful good. FREQUENCY: Uncommon. The Maemaegawaese are fairy spirits taking the form of tiny humans with butterfly wings. They may take the form of small children, much akin to the Pukwudjinees, but are more ethereal and graceful, overall, in appearance. They are friendly spirits of the forest, and though of a windling nature, are also closely aligned to wood. They speak their own language and are rarely seen; children especially are susceptible to visits from them, as the Maemaegawaese are playful and helpful, protecting small children when they wander off into the woods alone. Despite their cheerful dispositions, they are shy and reclusive toward adults, and will hide among the trees to avoid being seen. They have an affinity for Manabozho, as he is the creator of butterflies, their totem animal; it is sometimes believed that when the Maemaegawaese die, this is what they become. Once in a while their tittering laughter can be heard deep within the woods, especially when one is alone, but it is difficult to spot them.
MAGWAMOSA (Bearwalkers)
CLASS: Mortals. ELEMENT: None. ALIGNMENT: Mainly chaotic evil. FREQUENCY: Rare. Magwamosa is a term for a Bearwalker--a human who, through the use of black medicine, assumes the form of a giant bear. For the most part the Magwamosa are feared sorcerers, believed cursed and highly dangerous even though they are not of a spirit or elemental nature. They are considered to be much like the werewolves and lycanthropes of Europe, and often use their powers for evil. "Good" Magwamosa, and other skinwalkers, are even rarer to be found, but are believed to exist. It is virtually impossible to tell a "good" Bearwalker from a "bad" one, however.
MANITOUS (Spirits)
CLASS: Manitous. ELEMENT: Varied. ALIGNMENT: Varied. FREQUENCY: Common. "Manitous" is a general term for spirits. Technically, many of the beings upon Manitou Island can be considered manitous, even those who are not listed as such, if the more general meaning of the name is used; even the Ocryxes began their existence as manitous. However, here the term will be used to apply to the tribal manitous and the lake manitous. The form both types take is of a large shaggy creature with a bearlike body and a mooselike head and antlers, but without the curving nose that is distinctive to the moose. They bear sharp teeth and eyes that emit a blue glow, as well as sharp claws, though most tribal manitous are peaceful in nature. They dwell all throughout the Island according to their elemental nature; for example, a woodling manitou will dwell within the trees, a waterling manitou within a spring, a stoneling manitou within a rock, etc. They may live singly or in tribes/herds led by the strongest male, whose duty is to protect the others and seek out food and resting places. They communicate via whistling, singing, and telepathy. The lake manitous, those dwelling within Devil's Lake, are no different except in that they are tribal manitous who were corrupted by the demon Ocryx and made to live in the lake with him, acting as his servants. Whereas most tribal manitous are harmless, or at the most, retiring and reclusive, the lake manitous can be vicious and destructive. They use song to lure hapless mortals to the lake; without the proper protection, there is no defense once one has been ensnared by a manitou's song. Most mortals cannot tell the difference between tribal manitous and the lake manitous, though those who are manitou themselves can scent out the difference, and can teach non-manitous to do the same. Tribal manitous and lake manitous may occasionally converse or even mate, though this is not common, their dispositions being so different. Manitous are the spirits most frequently called upon for assistance by the natives of the Island; when calling for elemental power from a tree, for example, it is actually the manitou of the tree lending the power to the supplicant. They can be generous, as long as they are properly addressed and treated with respect; otherwise, they may ignore pleas, and may even lash out defensively. The leader of the lake manitous, under Ocryx's power, is Mitchi Manitou ("Bad Spirit"); the tribal manitous know no overall leader, though they recognize the more powerful manitous and spirits of the Island, such as Geezhigo-Quae and Gitchi Manitou. Their lives consist mainly of wandering about the Island, eating, nesting, and raising their families. They can assume both an upright (two-legged) form as already described above, or a four-legged, deerlike form which makes for ease of travel.
MASHENOMAK (Great Serpent)
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirit. ELEMENT: Waterling. ALIGNMENT: Chaotic evil. FREQUENCY: Unique. Mashenomak is the "king" of a class of evil serpent beings who live beneath the water, much akin to Mishupishu, the Underwater Lynx. Unlike Mishupishu, Mashenomak is much more powerful, and though he has been defeated by Manabozho in the past, he has never been subdued. He appears as a great black serpent with hideous features and glowing eyes, surrounded by his lesser minions; he and his fellows are often blamed for drownings, with good reason. He detests Manabozho and other beings of good alignment, and when not brooding is often to be found scheming of ways to do away with them.
MICHINIMAKINONG (Turtle Spirits)
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirits. ELEMENT: Varied. ALIGNMENT: Mainly neutral good. FREQUENCY: Common. The spirits for which the original Mackinac Island was named, the Michinimakinong are fairies closely aligned to the Great Turtle Spirit. They appear in human form, slightly smaller than average (between five and five and a half feet tall) and with dragonfly wings. The most well-known Michinimakinong (sometimes Makinong for short) are the windlings serving Geezhigo-Quae as warriors. According to their elemental nature, Michinimakinong may wear different accessories--feathers for windlings, semiprecious stones for stonelings, leaves for woodlings, etc. Most Michinimakinong are of a good nature, but are distrustful of mortals; they adhere to a strict code which forbids anything other than formal relations between themselves and other races. Despite this, there are occasional lapses; offending Michinimakinong are cast out of their tribes, as was the case with the being Sooleawa Chepi, when she consorted with the demon Ocryx. Among the Turtle Spirits, females can often serve in the same positions as males, thus women warriors are not too uncommon. They are skilled fighters due to their dexterity and ability to call upon the manitous for assistance, but may be injured in the same manner as mortals. The wings especially are susceptible to injury; fortunately, they may grow back not long after they have been torn off, and the tearing of a wing is not usually considered painful. On being cast out of their tribes, removal of the wings is a frequent occurrence. Not all Michinimakinong are as noble as Geezhigo-Quae's warriors; some are indifferent to humans, and some are hostile, but they are mostly reclusive and wish to be left alone. Despite their close affiliation with the other fairy spirits of the Island, such as the Maemaegawaese and Pukwudjinees, they are not nearly as playful and friendly as these others, instead being a rather dour and serious race. Aside from the manitous, they may be the most frequently found spirit species upon the Island.
MISHUPISHU (Underwater Lynx)
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirit. ELEMENT: Waterling. ALIGNMENT: Neutral evil. FREQUENCY: Rare. Mishupishu is the name of a great underwater spirit which takes a form somewhat like that of a serpent, somewhat like that of a wildcat. He is one of several related underwater monsters defeated by Manabozho, but his powers are not as great as those of the rest. Thus he can often be held in abeyance, despite his hostility toward mortals. For the most part he stays beneath the waters, as Manabozho can easily beat him back down if he rears his head. He is the only one of his kind known upon the Island, but there may be several others in existence.
MIZAUWABEEKUM (Hill Spirits)
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirits. ELEMENT: Stonelings, sandlings. ALIGNMENT: Neutral. FREQUENCY: Uncommon. The Mizauwabeekum are small spirits, appearing much as stunted children or dwarves, that live in hilly and rocky regions. In the absence of mountains upon Manitou Island, they tend to inhabit some of the rock formations, but are not frequently spotted as they tend to keep to themselves. They are related to the Pukwudjinees and Maemaegawaese, but are not as friendly; likewise they are the distant kin of the Michinimakinong, but are not nearly as graceful. Instead they are short and often ugly, and tend to be snappish and greedy. They mine ore from the rocks and hoard it to themselves, even though it is unknown whether they have any use for it. Not much is known about them or their society; most other races keep their distance, if only out of suspicion.
MUZZU-KUMMIK-QUAE (Earth Mother)
CLASS: Manitou. ELEMENT: Sandling. ALIGNMENT: Lawful good. FREQUENCY: Unique. Muzzu-Kummik-Quae, or the Earth Mother, is a being created by Geezhigo-Quae to tend to the earth. As such she is a manitou equal in importance, perhaps even more so, to Geezhigo-Quae, though she is not often seen in mortal form. Thus the shape she decides to assume is never known, until she decides to reveal herself. As the Earth Mother she is a good being, and kind toward those who respect her. She remains mostly hidden, like Gitch Manitou, so much cannot be said about her.
NEBANAUBAE (Sleepers)
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirits. ELEMENT: Waterlings. ALIGNMENT: Neutral. FREQUENCY: Uncommon. Nebanaubae, or "Sleepers," are water beings which inhabit the springs, pools, ponds, and lakes on and about Manitou Island. The mainland term for them would be "merfolk," since they appear as half fish, half human, with slender, graceful features and skin that is tinted blue or green. They are both male and female (the females being known technically as Nebanaubaequae), and their appearance is such that many are drawn to them, even against better reason. They are not evil beings, but are known to draw mortals into the water, either to their death or to live in the sleeping realm, where the Nebanaubae make their home. Some of their captives resist, but unless the Nebanaubae decide to release them, or unless they are rescued by a more powerful being, they will eventually become Nebanaubae themselves, after which point their desire to return home will either vanish or lessen greatly. The Sleepers are so named because of their ability to place their captives in a trancelike state, and because of their dwelling place between the worlds of waking and sleeping; whether they have any power over dreams or not is unknown. Nebanaubae may temporarily assume full human form to ascend to land, but they may only do so when it is dark or stormy, else they will not be able to see to find their way home. Unions between humans and their own kind are known; their most common method of luring landwalkers to their realm is to pretend to be a human in distress. Mortals are often made aware of their presence only moments before they appear, by looking into the water and seeing a strange face peering back out at them.
OCRYXES
CLASS: Demons. ELEMENT: Windlings/waterlings (possibly varied). ALIGNMENT: Varied. FREQUENCY: Rare. Originally, there were only two Ocryxes who were created as manitous, Ocryx and Ocryana, a male and a female. It was only when they turned upon each other that they were given demonic form, and now exist in a state that is halfway between spirit and demon. There are only three pureblooded Ocryxes, among them the two already named, as well as their son, Tal Natha. Pureblooded Ocryxes and any being that is more than half Ocryx (breeding between Ocryxes and other races is relatively common) assume the form of the demon--wolf head, furry body, eagle wings, snake tail, and deadly horns. Almost every Ocryx is distinctive in features, with varying fur/feather/tail colors and horn shapes, so it is not easy to mistake one for another. The Ocryxes possess their own tongue, but it is not frequently used, and many words are obsolete. They tend to live solitary lives, as one of the two ways in which an Ocryx may die is for another Ocryx to impale it with its horn. (The other way is to remove or destroy the Ocryx's source of power, should it be known.) Ocryx himself (He-Of-The-Glowing-Eyes) is the most powerful of the demons, and of a hostile disposition, yet for the most part simply wishes to be left in peace; he often engages in bargains with mortals, for a price, collecting precious gems and jewels as payment. Ocryana (She-Who-Moves-Like-The-Wind) is the most dangerous of the demons, with an aggressive, chaotic nature. Tal Natha (The Dreamspinner) is unlike his parents, being more mild in his disposition and tolerant toward mortals; it is he who brings dreams to those living upon the Island, and who watches over the Island itself. The survival of all three pureblooded Ocryxes is necessary for the Island to survive, as it depends upon them all. Ocryx makes his dwelling within Devil's Lake; Ocryana within the caves near Skull Cave; and Tal Natha within a cave near Fort Holmes. Aside from these three, there are numerous "lesser" Ocryxes, that is, halflings. As already said, any being that is more than half Ocryx will assume as its primary form the demon form; half-Ocryxes and lesser will assume the form of the human(oid) parent, if the other parent is human(oid); if the other parent is non-human, e. g., a tribal manitou, the offspring may assume a hybrid form. All are capable of shapeshifting, but ironically it is the halfbloods who are most adept at this, as they may rest comfortably in either shape; whereas pureblooded Ocryxes must eventually return to their demon form, and less than halfbloods [sic] to their original form. They may assume many different shapes, but the most common ones are the demon form, mortal form, and wolf, eagle, and snake form. Other forms such as horses or moose are also used. Despite their often hostile natures, Ocryxes often consort with mortals, and this has resulted in numerous halflings living upon the Island. Though in human form, the halfling offspring of Ocryxes and mortals can often be distinguished based on small but powerful traits they inherited from their demon parents--oddly colored eyes, strong medicine, etc. The Ocryxes, in general, are held in much fear and suspicion by both the natives and the former mainlanders upon the Island; their halfling children have not managed to completely escape this prejudice themselves.
PAUGUK (The Flying Skeleton)
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirit. ELEMENT: None. ALIGNMENT: Neutral. FREQUENCY: Unique. Known as "The Emaciated One," the "Flying Skeleton," or the "Flaming Skeleton," Pauguk is the personification of Death to the Islanders. He was once a native like themselves, who was cursed to enter neither the Realm of Spirits nor the underworld after he had murdered his own brother in an attempt to gain his wife for himself. He appears as a terrifying skeleton with bits of rags and flesh still clinging to his bones, and with glowing lights within his empty eyesockets; he is regarded with much fear, but does not appear to be malicious.
PUKWUDJINEES (Little People)
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirits. ELEMENT: Sandlings. ALIGNMENT: Chaotic good. FREQUENCY: Common. Along with the Butterfly Spirits, Turtle Spirits, and Hill Spirits, the Pukwudjinees make up the class of "little" spirits dwelling upon the Island. They appear as small children of about toddler age, yet instead of being clumsy as children they are quick and deft. They can often be heard giggling in the forest before they are even seen. Much like the Maemaegawaese, they look after lost children, occasionally even enticing them into the woods to play. They are distrustful of the Nebanaubae and lake manitous, and try to warn mortals away from these beings before they can be ensnared and drowned. They speak their own language but can understand the tongues of other races; they appear mainly to children, most of the time keeping themselves hidden from adults. Still, they are not quite as reclusive as the Maemaegawaese. Occasionally a "bad" Pukwudjinee may be found, but these are usually solitary, having been left behind by the rest when their spirits were corrupted. Corrupt Pukwudjinees can no longer sustain the friendly, childlike form of their peers, and become ugly and twisted.
UROONA (Guardians of the forest)
CLASS: Miscellaneous spirits. ELEMENT: Sandlings, stonelings. ALIGNMENT: Lawful good. FREQUENCY: Uncommon. The guardians of the forest, the Uroona appear as giant, intimidating beings of earth and rock, when in truth they are peaceful and docile and keep mainly to themselves. Despite their giant size they are not frequently seen; they can blend into their surroundings as easily as any small creature, and can also move silently, should they wish to. They communicate via empathy and thought pictures, though they occasionally omit sounds similar to those that whales make. It is their duty to watch over the woods and all beings, especially the small spirits and manitous, that live within them.
WENDIGOES
CLASS: Wendigoes. ELEMENT: Windlings. ALIGNMENT: Varied. FREQUENCY: Common. Wendigo is a general term which includes several different but related windling races, especially the GeeBees and the Windwalkers. Due to the activities of the GeeBees, the term "Wendigo" has obtained a negative connotation; it has even become a psychiatric term, as people who "snap" during cold spells and become cannibalistic are now said to have "gone Wendigo."
WINDWALKERS
CLASS: Wendigoes. ELEMENT: Windlings. ALIGNMENT: Neutral. FREQUENCY: Uncommon. The Windwalkers, closest kin to the cannibal GeeBees, are not as common as their brothers. They assume a similar form, but are feminine (unlike the all-male GeeBees) and more graceful and ethereal, with long fringed ears and pale eyes. They are not nearly as chaotic nor as dangerous as their brothers, yet have been known to carry mortals off, never to be seen again; what becomes of them is unknown, though it is not believed that the Windwalkers ate them. As the GeeBees are led by Augwak, the Windwalkers are led by Sooleawa Chepi, a former Michinimakinong and self-proclaimed "Queen of the Windwalkers." They dwell mostly within an enchanted cave not far from Devil's Lake, and come out most often in the colder months.
Following are the elemental alignments, and which races are most often associated with them.

WATER ELEMENTALS (Waterlings)
Halflings; halfling spirits; Kenu; manitous; Mashenomak; Michinimakinong; Mishupishu; Nebanaubae; Ocryxes.
MISCELLANEOUS ELEMENTALS (Stonelings, Woodlings, etc.)
Halflings; halfling spirits; manitous; Michinimakinong; Mizauwabeekum; Uroona.
